Welcome to the Thorp family history website

Welcome to the family history website for the Thorp family descended from Jonathan Thorp of Wilmslow, Cheshire, England (1704 - 1742).

Although many of the members of this family spent some or all of their life in the Cheshire and Manchester areas, they are now spread all over the world, including London, United States and Australia.

**NEW - June 2006** A short article about some early portraits that have recently come to light, including the original portrait of John 'The Quaker' Thorp of Manchester, a Victorian photographic copy of which appears at the top of each page of this website. See Artefacts.

**NEW - June 2004** An article about my trip round Cheshire on 1 June 2004 to look for Thorp family landmarks - information and photographs about Macclesfield, Rainow, Prestbury, Wilmslow and Alderley Edge. See History.

**NEW - March 2004** Thank you to Richard S Thorp of WA, USA - no (known) relative - for contacting us and sending some information he had received from Mrs Watson in 1991. This has added several dozen names to the listings, spanning the last three centuries and more, many new dates and particularly importantly has added one generation further back: John and Sarah Thorp of Bollin, near Wilmslow, Cheshire, the grandparents of Jonathan Thorp of Wilmslow.

**NEW - March 2004** We have recently found more Thorp family members in the 1920 and 1930 US Census index. See John Notman Thorp for information on his granddaughters Betty Thorp and Margaret T. Cowley, both born shortly after the First World War.

HISTORY is an area under development, which will cover topics of interest to this family, such as the silk trade and the Society of Friends (Quakers). It will also contain a section ARTEFACTS, which will include details and photographs of family items of interest. The section DOCUMENTS (**coming soon!**) will contain transcriptions of some letters and other written documents that are held by the author and other members of the family.

Alternatively, the biographic information, with photographs, are given in alphabetical order, by given name, under BIOGRAPHY.

The family members known to the author of this website are listed - generation by generation - in family tree order under LISTINGS. There are links from each name to biographical information and/or photographs, wherever these are available.

The section TREES contains dowloadable pdfs of various parts of the Thorp family trees.

The GALLERY contains photographs and silhouettes of Thorp family members and other related images.
